Magic Squares Series

The "Magic Squares" series began with interest in the Islamic use of mathematical magic squares. The numeral itself is the abstract image used in the composition. Historically, assigned numbers were given to each of the planets. Based on those numbers, tile arrangements were an effort to produce a version of the cosmos within an architectural site. Rene Culler was awarded grants from the Ohio Arts Council to travel in Spain and France, and also financed travel in Istanbul and Turkey (through teaching there) to research the subject. For this series, the high refractory paint and process she developed provides imagery within the glass.
